Summary
Andrew Jones’ was the lead concept artist for the Metroid Prime series. His works, and the works he supervised as lead concept artist, highly influenced my art direction for my own game Celestial Power. I would spend hours staring at the details of his art, and my imagination would spin. It is clear that Andrew Jones’ work are influenced by Alien and H.R. Gieger’s work, which were also the prime influence for the creation of the Metroid series back in the 80s.
What made his work incredible for me?
Jones’ creature concept art is incredible. Jones creates gritty, realistic creatures, most of which feel grounded in a comprehensive understanding of biology, musculo-skeletal structures, etc. Mixed with the log entries in the game (description of creatures), it infused a strong sense that these creatures evolved and belonged in their respective environments. This stimulated me, opening my curiosity and playfulness in my artistic process; with this realistic approach, I could create and solve puzzles that would make my worldbuilding more coherent and diegetic.
