Summary
The Metroid Prime series is near and dear to my heart. From the first notes of the opening intro theme of Metroid Prime with its mysterious organic background animation (inside of a Metroid), I was hooked. The Metroid franchise has taken me further and has seeded more curiosity and imagination than any other.
Why are these games so foundational to me?
The Metroid Prime Trilogy craft a sublime atmosphere of loneliness, isolation, awe, melancholic serenity and eerie solitude through haunting soundscapes, alien architecture, and environmental storytelling. What stuck with me the most was it’s masterful ability to tell the story of ancient civilizations, leaving me to piece the glorious and haunted history of its locations as I discovered them, feeling like an archaeologist accessing the ancient pyramids of Giza for the first time. Its score was also unique, creating strong emotions of alienation, dread, and the melancholy that can only be found while watching the decay of once great civilizations.
As shared in Andrew “Android” Jones’ gallery, another key point that made me adopt the series deeply was its commitment to create believable creature and environmental designs, pulling me into it further.
This series’ influence is far reaching in my artistic practices, especially when it comes to worldbuilding and creating video games (Celestial Power being one of them, I’ve done several other, though none as through).
